As of the summer of 2021, we have completed the Visioning and Vulnerability Assessment phases and are in the middle of Strategy Development. Next up is Implementation Planning. Between June and September 2021, we are ramping up our public engagement efforts to ensure we hear from a diverse range of Salem residents about their priorities and concerns regarding climate change. Below is a summary of our progress and a brief overview of what you can expect to see this summer.

  • During Visioning, we asked what you wanted to see for your community in 2050. The results of that exercise can be downloaded here.
  • Then, we conducted a Vulnerability Assessment, which outlines the climate impacts that Salem is most vulnerable to (like wildfires). View the highlights of that report in English or Spanish.
  • Next, we began Strategy Development, where we asked for ideas for specific strategies and requested your review of the detailed list we compiled.
  • Now, we want to directly connect with frontline communities (i.e., those who are most impacted by climate change and are in greatest need of resources and tools to address climate impacts) to ensure that everyone's voice is included in this process. Over the summer, we will be meeting with community groups, attending community events, and more, with the intent of reaching a more diverse audience and communicating about this project in an equitable way.

If you have ideas for outreach with frontline communities, please share them with us at SalemCAP@cityofsalem.net. We'd love to attend your community group meeting or event and share a presentation or host a conversation.

In the activity below, you can see the high-level objectives that came out of our process to brainstorm, organize, and refine ideas for ways to address and adapt to climate change. By liking, commenting, or adding additional ideas to this tool, you'll be helping us make sure we are inclusive and that the strategies that the City of Salem ultimately pursues are ones supported and vetted by a diverse range of voices. This activity will be available through October 3, 2021

You can see a list of detailed strategies that we are considering in this document (updated August 16, 2021)

We will use the community's input to revise and draft new strategies that will guide GHG emissions reduction and help the Salem community prepare for the effects of climate change.
